ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS

Kerala State came into existence on November 1, 1956 as a result of the re-organisation of Indian States. At thetime of re-organisation, there were 9 districts and 55 taluks in the State. Presently, there are 14 districts and 61 taluks. The State is situated between 8018' and 12°48' N latitude and 74°52' and 77°22' E longitude. The State has a total area of 38864 km2 as per the records of Surveyor General of India. The population of the State as per 1991 Census is 29011237. The names of districts/taluks and the talukwise population are given below.

. *Kasaragod district was formed in 1984with the merger of two taluks earlier belongingto Cannanore district. This has been reflected in the statistics furnished.

**Pathanamthitta district was formed in 1982 and hence the area and population are reflected in the statistics for Alleppey, Qullon and Idukki districts. Pathanamthitta taluk of old Quilon district and Tiruvalla taluk of old Alleppey district are now in Pathanamthitta district.

1. Names in parentheses denote the places of taluk headquarters.

2. The district headquarters are also the taluk headquarters, except in the case of Wynad and Pathanamthitta districts.
